We’ll be working on the Sanders essay revision in a workshop during class on Wednesday this week. I’ve created a revision guide you can use to begin improving your essay if you want to get an early start on it.

I know you do. 🙂

Your first essay of the second semester will be an analysis essay focused on a piece by Scott Russell Sanders. It will be due Friday, February 1, 2013 in class and we will review how to approach it in class on Friday, January 25.

Good luck!

Remember there are two parts to your AP Language final:

When we discuss My Satirical Self, we will address these questions:
  1. Mason suggests (page 1) that satire offers relief from having to endure a reasonable argument in unreasonable times. Discuss his premise and conclusion.
  2. Mason metaphorically compares our love of satire with a coffee addiction. Is this a fair comparison?
  3. How (page 2) does satire serve our culture?
  4. Mason evokes Juvenal’s argument that Rome had become a “monstrous city” that needed satire. Has the United States become so monstrous that satire is the only reasonable response?
  5. Mason argues that modern satire is less about societal improvement, more about the appearance of cleverness. Is he correct?
  6. Are we, as Mason suggests (page 6), living in a vice-blighted age?
  7. Should politicians like President Bush and President Obama use satire (page 6) or does this demean their offices?

You’ve got some work to do on Propaganda this week.

On Tuesday, you’ll go over the 33 techniques of traditional propaganda. You’ll need to match the technique with its definition and provide an example for each. You can review the techniques here and/or use the Quizlet for practice here.

The second day of the exam on Wednesday will cover everything else in a test that combines quotation identification, short answer, and detailed paragraph responses. All of the notes for the exam are available in this folder. There is a lot of content for this test, so definitely be prepared for a challenging exam. I have added a study guide for day two of the exam here.

The material included on the second day of the exam will be:

  • the basics of propaganda (history, data smog, propaganda/persuasion continuum)
  • George Orwell
  • Noam Chomsky and Edward Herman
  • Response to Chomsky and Herman
  • Jacque Ellul
  • Neil Postman

On the second day of the exam, please bring your packet so I can evaluate and grade your annotation of the texts.

On Thursday, your propaganda project and presentation is due in class.
