Don’t get enough time in school reading and talking about articles with Mr. Pogreba? Want to discuss interesting pieces in a less formal academic setting? Just desperate for something, anything to do on a Tuesday night? Then Discussion Group is for you!

Come join Mr. Pogreba and Ms. Walsh every Tuesday night for a discussion about topical, interesting pieces over coffee.

This week we’ll meet at the Starbucks on Prospect at 7:00 p.m and read the article posted here.

Your third essay prompt is posted and available for download here. The essay will be due on Sunday, October 8 at 12:00 p.m. and should reflect an understanding of the topics we have been discussing this fall:

  • development of ideas
  • STAMPY introductions
  • clear topic sentences that present arguments and contain transitions
  • effective use of concrete detail, naysayers, and metaphorical language

If you want to retake the persuasion test, you can any day this week during these times:

  • 6:45 a.m.
  • 7:20 a.m.
  • 2:30 p.m.

You have until the end of the week to take the exam again and should remember that your new grade will replace the old one, even if you do worse the second time.

Study before you take it!

Your second essay this year is about high school sports, with the specific prompt and information located in the downloads folder. You can also download it directly here.

It will be due via Google Docs at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 24. My e-mail address for sharing is dpogreba@gmail.com.

Please review the instructions in the prompt and try to include the ideas for introductions, naysayers, and structure we discussed in class over the past week.

Your revisions for the essay about the Confederate Memorial Fountain will be due in class on Friday, September 15. Remember that revisions need to be printed before class and stapled to the first draft, with all new sections and revisions bolded in the revised document.

You can start making some of these broad changes immediately if you’d like to get a head start. You’ll have specific, individual feedback in your hands by Tuesday.
