AP Language students will have their research papers on education reform back when they return to class on Monday. The revisions will be due on Sunday, December 8th at 1:00 p.m. I’d suggest sending the papers in PDF format to preserve MLA formatting when you submit the final drafts.

We’ll conference about the papers during the block days on Wednesday and Thursday, but do not wait to work on the revisions until then. I’d recommend that you begin work immediately. In some cases, I’d begin work now before you get the papers back.

Resources for Revision

Issues with the Papers (This list will grow over Saturday and Sunday)

  • Thesis statements need to be clear, concise arguments for the change you’d like to see.
  • Any specific claims, statistics and other information needs to be cited.
  • The papers must have quality, academic research and not rely too heavily on web sites or informal interviews.
  • The authors should apply broad, academic research to the specific situation facing HHS/HSD1. For instance, if you were arguing for better mentor programs, an academic article about the benefits of such a program can certainly and should certainly be applied to your specific proposal.
  • The papers need to use quotations effectively. Too often, they are relying on very broad paraphrasing that does not a) capture the nuance of the original source or b) adequately support your arguments.
  • Have a clearly defined proposal. The reader should have no doubt about what you plan to do.
  • The papers need to feel like they have been written as part of a collaborative, cohesive process. Right now, many feel like the product of multiple authors working independently, leading to fragmented, disjointed, and/or repetitive papers.

The Education Unit test will have two portions, one section of paragraph response and one section of essay response. The details of the test are below. Click “read more” to get the specific questions.

I’m going to provide some general tips for revision here soon, but thought I’d let you know the deadlines for revision.

Period 6: Friday at 5:00 p.m.
Periods 3/5: Monday at 3:00 p.m.

If you are looking for some research on your research papers, there are some scholarly articles and studies in this folder.

The TSA has implemented a system of 94 signs that a plane passenger is a potential terrorist, but Nate Anderson explains that there’s little evidence the program works:

Science! Forget subjective screening, which too often slides into racial and ethnic profiling; instead, evaluate travelers entering an airport using a rigorous set of objective measurements that could spot deception. This was the admirable principle behind the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) program known as Screening of Passengers by Observation Techniques (SPOT), which has been operating at airports around the country since 2007 at a total cost of $900 million—or about $200 million a year.

Unfortunately, according to the US government’s internal watchdog agency, little real science stands behind the program. In a new report (PDF) released today, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) concluded that “the human ability to accurately identify deceptive behavior based on behavioral indicators is the same as or slightly better than chance.” And it dryly noted that programs like SPOT should be “demonstrated to work reliably in their intended environment prior to program deployment.”
