Honest, this is interesting. Well, if you are the kind of person who finds the laws of the universe, Plato, science and faith interesting.

From the New York Times :

Existence didn’t have to be that way, as Einstein reminded us when he said, “The most incomprehensible thing about the universe is that it is comprehensible.” Against all the odds, we can send e-mail to Sri Lanka, thread spacecraft through the rings of Saturn, take a pill to chase the inky tendrils of depression, bake a turkey or a soufflé and bury a jump shot from the corner.

We don’t know, and might never know, if science has overbid its hand. When in doubt, confronted with the complexities of the world, scientists have no choice but to play their cards as if they can win, as if the universe is indeed comprehensible. That is what they have been doing for more than 2,000 years, and they are still winning.

I am going to create a new system for uploading essays over the break, so if you have any files that are saved on this server in the briefcase that you need to save, please download them by Friday night.

If you are looking for some notes on Invisible Man, these are your options:

Rumor has it that returning students are more than welcome to return this Friday for an exciting Strikebo Slambo showdown, during periods 3-5.

Also, look for a discussion group article by midday Monday.

"Our greatest challenge today…is to couple conviction with doubt. By conviction, I mean some pragmatically developed faith, trust, or centeredness; and by doubt I mean openness to the ongoing changeability, mystery, and fallibility of the conviction."
     ~ Kirk Schneider, 1999, The Paradoxical Self, p. 7

"Good art wounds as well as delights. It must, because our defenses against the truth are wound so tightly around us. But as art chips away at our defenses, it also opens us to healing potentialities that transcend intellectual games and ego-preserving strategies."
~ Rollo May, 1985, My Quest for Beauty, p. 172

"One repays a teacher badly if one always remains nothing but a pupil."
     ~ Nietzsche, 1892/1966, Thus Spoke Zarathustra (W. Kaufmann, Trans.), p. 78
